The Evolution of Bamboo: A new Paradigm for the Architecture and Construction Industry https://en.alivietnam.vn/the-evolution-of-bamboo-a-new-paradigm-for-the-architecture-and-construction-industry-3724/ https://en.alivietnam.vn/the-evolution-of-bamboo-a-new-paradigm-for-the-architecture-and-construction-industry-3724/#respond Thu, 06 Jul 2023 08:43:57 +0000 https://en.bambooali.com/?p=3724 In the world of sustainable materials, bamboo holds a steadily growing and special place. This article will examine the emergence of Engineered Bamboo, consider bamboo’s role as a high-end green building material and look at some examples of new sustainable ‘green building’ projects.

Bamboo: Beyond the Tiki Bar Aesthetic

Bamboo can conjure images of tropical landscapes, Tiki bars, and decorative elements. This charming, textural element is not the only feature of bamboo worth noting. The engineering of bamboo has provided a new resource that can help offset Australia’s timber shortage and ultimately become a partner to the timber and construction industries.

The drive to reduce carbon emissions by the construction industry has meant it has started to look at new ways to make their practices greener. The overall goal is to reduce the amount of ‘embodied carbon’ within construction. Embodied carbon refers to the total carbon emissions released during construction, renovation, and demolition. As such we have seen the proliferation of a number of so-called ‘green buildings’ being built across the world, including Australia.

One of the ways to reduce emissions is to increase the use of lumber in construction. By reducing the use of materials like concrete and then including greener materials such as timber – the construction industry can start to achieve their goals. However, questions have been raised about the true sustainability of this practice.

Curved Bamboo ceiling in Madrid International Airport, completed in 2005.

The main concern with timber demand is that any increase will put pressure on timber stocks that are already strained. We have recently experienced supply issues due to the bushfires of 2019-2020 and COVID-19. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has also had a heavy impact on timber supply out of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. Trade sanctions on Russia and Belarus have only deepened these timber shortages.

One option to help mitigate these shortages is to use engineered bamboo. In this process bamboo fibres are bonded together under high pressure to produce materials for construction. Engineered bamboo offers enhanced strength, durability, and dimensional stability, making it an excellent substitute for traditional timber. In fact, it can be stronger than many hardwood species, making it suitable for demanding structural applications.

Engineered Bamboo: Redefining Strength and Durability

Dimensional stability is another critical attribute of engineered bamboo. Traditional bamboo materials as with any natural material are prone to expansion and contraction due to changes in moisture and temperature. Through the manufacturing process of engineered bamboo, fibres are aligned and compressed significantly reducing the material’s susceptibility to these stresses. This dimensional stability ensures that engineered bamboo maintains its structural integrity over time, even under challenging environmental conditions.

The timber equivalent to engineered bamboo is CLT (Cross Laminated Timber). CLT falls under the mass timber umbrella as a product engineered for strength comparable with concrete. It is these technologies that will be employed by the construction industry as they construct greener buildings. Engineered bamboo however offers other benefits to CLT as it builds upon the inherent sustainability as a rapidly renewable resource unlike timber.

When it comes to bamboo – nothing goes to waste. Engineered bamboo utilises bamboo stems that have reached maturity and the appropriate level of strength of density – this takes approximately 5-7 years. Whereas the softwood timber used to make CLT takes upwards of 30+ years to reach a level of maturity suitable for production. Engineered bamboo is a strong contender to CLT, making it a good alternate choice while not relying on a depleting forest industry.

How Engineered Bamboo Can Help Solve Skyrocketing Timber Wastage

A point must be made regarding waste when it comes to timber harvesting. A 2019 report released by the Sustainable Built Environment Research Centre of Australia provided statistics on timber waste from around the world and found that in 2016-2017 Australia generated more than 2 million tonnes of timber waste in the year reported. 25.8% of this waste was attributed to the construction and demolition sector.

Another more recent study conducted by Dr Jen Sanger for the Trees Project found that when harvesting timber in NSW approximately 60% of the total biomass is left on site. Half of this is woody debris that is left on site and the rest is burnt. In contrast bamboo harvests the mature culm (stem) leaving behind the root, which remains in place in order to re-grow another stem for a future harvest.

We can further reduce the need for timber and put less pressure on already limited supply by utilising engineered bamboo for elements such as beams, posts, trusses, flooring, wall cladding and even roofing material.

Construction Landscape Goes Green: The Rise of Sustainable Buildings

Some examples of new local hybrid timber buildings include: the world’s tallest hybrid timber tower being built by tech giant Atlassian in Sydney; the Boola Katitjin at Murdoch University in Western Australia and T3 Collingwood – a 15 level hybrid timber office in Melbourne.

World’s tallest hybrid timber tower to house Atlassian HQ in Sydney

These buildings will be setting a benchmark for sustainability. Atlassian’s building has targeted a 50% reduction in embodied carbon (embodied carbon is the carbon dioxide emissions associated with materials and construction processes throughout the whole lifecycle of a building). This is a fantastic target, however both Atlassian and the Boola Katitjin building have needed to resort to importing timber from Europe as softwood timber supplies needed for CLT are in short supply within Australia. If engineered bamboo had been incorporated into these designs, both projects would be making even further strides towards the sustainable future they envisage.

Robotic technology pilot underway on timber building for Perth university

The T3 Collingwood building will receive a $70 million investment from the Clean Energy Finance Corporation. The building hopes to lower embodied carbon by 34%. It is this sort of investment and commitment that we need for the bamboo industry. Bamboo provides a viable and sustainable alternative to Australia’s critically depleted timber stocks for the construction of green buildings. Bamboo’s rapid growth, renewability and versatility make it an attractive resource that deserves funding and support. By investing in the bamboo sector, governments can further reduce emissions, build new industries and protect local forests.

Laminated Bamboo Products https://en.alivietnam.vn/laminated-bamboo-products-3661/ https://en.alivietnam.vn/laminated-bamboo-products-3661/#respond Tue, 21 Jul 2020 00:19:24 +0000 https://en.bambooali.com/?p=3661 The production process of Bamboo’Ali laminated bamboo includes all the steps to create a material that is a very stable and attractive natural alternative to many non-renewable materials like hardwood, plastic or composite. Laminated bamboo is produced from flat bamboo strips, which are horizontally or vertically placed and glued together into panels or beams as a base material for many applications. Below we explain how Bamboo’Ali laminated bamboo flooring and boards are produced from hollow bamboo stems, to reach the highest quality products:

1. Harvesting the right bamboo

Making use of the best base material will result in the best final product. Bamboo stems have an optimum age when talking about Bamboo’Ali products: ideally, the stems are harvested when they are 5 years old. Younger stems are not fully lignified and, therefore, the material will not have the right density and is not hard enough. Older stems turn grey, resulting in unattractive stains in final products. The quality of the bamboo stems can be partly determined during purchasing, but this is difficult to see in the new final product as the bamboo can still behave in an unexpected way later on when low quality stems have been used. Bamboo’Ali products are made of the best base material, which is checked carefully by our own skillful workers, before production is started.

2. Making bamboo strips from hollow stems

Freshly harvested bamboo stems are cut into strips, and this production process consists of more than just slicing the hollow bamboo stem into pieces. When removing the skin, bamboo material is also lost, which is considered waste that can be used as biomass for energy production. The more bamboo that is removed and turned into biomass, the more expensive the remaining strip becomes meaning the best bamboo strips have no skin left, thus are the most best quality strips. When determining the quality of the strips, it is the purchasing phase that is of importance, but you will not directly see the difference in the final product. Bamboo’Ali only accepts high quality strips for its bamboo products and our experienced workers check the strips before production is started.

3. Thermal treatment to alter the colour

Our laminated bamboo products come in two standard colours: Natural and Carbonize. Natural is the colour of the material without thermal treatment. When the bamboo strips are steamed, they become darker and more brownish: Carbonize. Natural and Carbonize strips are suitable for indoor use and, only after impregnation, Carbonize strips are also suitable for both indoor and outdoor uses. The bamboo strips will be dried until they reach the necessary moisture percentage for further production.

4. Moisture content defines the stability of bamboo products

Bamboo is, like any other natural material, affected by moisture: it expands when its moisture content increases and contracts when its moisture content decreases. It is crucial that the moisture content is lowered and controlled in drying rooms within each production step. The moisture content of the final product determines significantly the way bamboo products behave after installation. A large difference in moisture content can create big problems. As an example: when installing a product with a too high moisture content in a dry area, the bamboo product will shrink because the moisture content decreases in the new situation. To ensure the high quality of the final bamboo products, Bamboo’Ali quality inspectors keep track of the moisture content during and after production of each production batch.

5. Sorting the strips by colour

Since bamboo is a natural product and only a steam process is used to change the colour of the strips, it is possible that there are slight differences in colour between the individual strips. Before the strips are ready to be processed further, they will be sorted by colour tone and checked for their quality. While many producers make bamboo products of the mixed coloured strips they have in stock, Bamboo’Ali can define the required colour or supply bamboo products in specific colour batches.

6. Bamboo products contain bamboo and glue

The bamboo strips will be glued together. Although the final product only contains 1 to 2% of glue, Bamboo’Ali aims to replace chemical resins by bio-glues. So far, no bio-glue can match the high Bamboo’Ali quality requirements. Until bio-glues can be used in production, without compromising quality, glue from respectable brands is used, ensuring the lowest emissions and best bonding. The type and amount of glue is very hard to determine once the final product is manufactured. Glue costs are significantly decisive on the total production costs. Many factories make their own glue or use glue from a local supplier to lower such costs, while we choose to work with respectable brands.

7. Laminating bamboo can be done in various ways

Depending on the type of product and required dimensions, the bamboo strips can be glued together in different ways. In the Plain Pressed variation, the bamboo strips are placed horizontally and in the Side Pressed variation, the bamboo strips are placed vertically. Each type of glue requires a certain temperature and compression to cure. Besides the quality of the glue, this curing process defines the quality of the end product. If the glue is not cured well, the bamboo can delaminate after a certain period of time.

How bamboo products are made https://en.alivietnam.vn/how-bamboo-products-are-made-3610/ https://en.alivietnam.vn/how-bamboo-products-are-made-3610/#respond Tue, 21 Jul 2020 00:17:31 +0000 https://en.bambooali.com/?p=3610 Transforming a hollow bamboo stem into a high quality Bamboo’Ali products – how is it done? With over 12 years of experience in the bamboo industry, Bamboo’Ali has learnt to manage the production process to perfection.

STEM TO STRIP

After 4-5 years the bamboo stems are ready for harvest. This is very fast compared to (tropical) hardwoods and one of the main reasons why bamboo is ecological. After harvesting the stems are split lengthwise to strips and the outer skin (bark) is removed. Naturally, the strips have a light yellow colour (natural), but can they be steamed to acquire a light brown colour (caramel).

STRIP TO PRODUCT

After treating and drying, the strips are ready to be joined in several ways to make the final product.

ASSEMBLY OF STRIPS

After drying, strips are assembled in many different ways, producing end products with various looks

Horizontal

Bamboo strips are positioned horizontally and glued together. This creates an elegant line pattern with the characteristic bamboo nodes clearly visible.

Vertical

Bamboo strips are positioned vertically and glued together. This creates a narrow line pattern with the bamboo nodes visible in a subtle way.

Strand Woven

Here the bamboo strips are pressed and glued under extremely high pressure. This compression increases the density from 700kg/m3 to more than 1.100kg/m3 which makes the final product much harder. The look of High Density strand woven bamboo is unique. It largely resembles wood with the typical “flames,” and the bamboo nodes are only slightly visible.

Strand Woven Bamboo Products https://en.alivietnam.vn/strand-woven-bamboo-products-3689/ https://en.alivietnam.vn/strand-woven-bamboo-products-3689/#respond Mon, 20 Jul 2020 06:58:27 +0000 https://en.bambooali.com/?p=3689 The Bamboo’Ali Strand Woven bamboo production process includes all the steps to create a material that is harder, stronger and more durable than almost any wood, and an attractive natural alternative to many non-renewable materials. The material is produced from bamboo strips (fibers), which are compressed into beams or panels as a base material for many products. Below we explain how our bamboo flooring, beams and boards are produced from hollow bamboo stems, to reach the highest quality products:

Bamboo’Ali products are made of the best base material, which is checked by our own team, before production is started.

The more bamboo that is removed and turned into biomass, the more expensive the remaining strip becomes meaning the best bamboo strips have no skin left, thus are the most expensive strips. When determining the quality of the strips, it is the purchasing phase that is of importance, but you will not directly see the difference in the final product. Bamboo’Ali only accepts high quality strips for its bamboo products and our experienced workers check the strips before production is started.

3. Crushing the strips for further bamboo production

The bamboo strips are crushed to open up the material for further processing and become bundles of bamboo fibers, called strands. This process and quality of the crushing will determine the quality of the glue impregnation and bonding in the next production steps. A better crushing of the strands requires more precise processing, and therefore higher costs. Bamboo’Ali skillful workers checks the strands before production is started.

4. Thermal treatment to alter the stability and color

Strand Woven bamboo products are available in three standard colors: Natural, Carbonize and Tiger. Natural is the color of the material without thermal treatment. When the bamboo strands are steamed, they become darker and more brownish. With a thermal treatment of ca. 200°C the color changes into a dark brown: carbonize. The treatment alters the material: the sugar component of the bamboo is caramelized or broken down, making the material more durable and stable. This treatment can be executed at various temperatures for a shorter or longer time. Lower temperatures and shorter times usually result in lower costs, a preferred option for some manufacturers. Bamboo’Ali always focuses on the optimal durability and stability of the final bamboo product and ensures the best treatment of the materials.

5. Bamboo products contain bamboo and glue

Crushed bamboo strands are glued and compressed to bond the bamboo fibers together. Bamboo’Ali aims to replace chemical resins with bio-glues. However, the quality of the final products is most important to Bamboo’Ali, meaning this is not possible yet. So far, no bio-glue can match the high Bamboo’Ali quality requirements. Until bio-glues can be used in production without compromising quality, glue from respectable brands is used, ensuring the lowest emissions and best bonding. The type and amount of glue applied during the production is very hard to determine once the final product is manufactured. Glue costs are significant in the total production costs. Many factories make their own glue or use glue from a local supplier to reduce such costs, while we choose to work with respectable brands.

6. Compressing bamboo can be done in various ways

Depending on the type of product, dimensions, and required color of bamboo, compression can be done in cold-press or hot-press systems. Each type of glue needs a certain temperature during compression to cure. Additionally, the way bamboo strands are placed in the molds has an effect on the stability and look of the final product. Well-trained Bamboo’Ali quality controllers test the material after this important production step to ensure the quality of the final product. It is hardly possible to do this without laboratory tests.

7. Moisture content defines the stability of bamboo products

Bamboo, like any other natural material, is affected by moisture: it expands when its moisture content increases and contracts when its moisture content decreases. It is crucial that, within each production step, the moisture content is lowered and controlled in drying rooms. The moisture content of the final product, supplied from the factory, determines significantly the way bamboo products behave after installation.

8. Final Strand Woven bamboo product

The last step in the Strand Woven bamboo production is the final profiling of the material. A material as hard and dense as high density bamboo requires a lot from the tools used for profiling. By using high quality, often European made machines, Bamboo’Ali ensures the right way of processing the material into final products. A good example is the way click systems are profiled into the material. The best machines create the best surface finishing. Depending on the product, Bamboo’Ali uses Strand Woven bamboo as a top layer for panels and flooring, or as solid beams or flooring.
